Liyana Fizi plays acoustic tunes tinged with a mix of folk and bossa. Gaining acknowledgment for her melodic songwriting, the singer made her first debut as one of the founding members of Malaysian indie-pop band Estrella. Everyday musings and inward thoughts are the main elements of her music, using simplicity as the main staple. Currently singing and playing rhythm guitar as a solo artiste since September 2009, Liyana performs with her permanent band of sessionists, and takes a vast interest in using music as an outlet for expression.
As the singer/songwriter and rhythm guitarist for her old band Estrella, Liyana together with other founding member and lead guitarist Adzwan Ani (Yob), circulated the local scene with their own brand of acoustic music back in 2006, before the band decided to team up and expand with Laguna Music in January 2007. Estrella's self-titled album was released in December 2007, and in a span of a year, the band was rewarded with 8 nominations for the inaugural Voize Independent Music Awards [VIMA]. However, due to internal changes in direction for Estrella made by the record label, Liyana decided to move on upon the band's contract expiry on 30th Sept 2009, following the footsteps of Yob who had left the band the year before.

ELECTRIFYING THE ACOUSTIC
While the intentions were sincere, My Acoustic Affair could have been more about wood than wire.
WE may think Malaysians' laid back attitude is reflected in our music, but dance beats and rock kapak still seem to be what dominates radio and music venues. Any mention of going for an acoustic night is usually met with more than a little trepidation.
In spite of this, promoter Managemix bravely kicked of the first of its My Acoustic Affair series last Saturday at the Bentley Music Auditorium, in Mutiara Damansara, an increasingly popular spot for shows, recently hosting Japanese prog-rockers Toe and American singer-songwriter Kina Grannis.

The festival has been organized by the Zhuhai Municipal Bureau of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Starting from late afternoon on the Saturday four bands will play on Beishan Theater's stage. The stage will see performances from Irish folk musicians, Swing Brosse System from France, a Chinese band singing in the Chaoshan dialect, a flamenco-jazz quartet and a Malaysian Bossanova singer. BIG 8TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY
IT was fun, fun, fun at 8TV's 8th anniversary bash last week. From 4pm to 12.30am at the 1Utama open car park space, 8TV hosts and more than 20,000 supporters took part in the countdown which included a dazzling fireworks display.
There were performances, stilt walkers, puppets shows, shuffling competitions and more.
The venue was converted into a swanky party space with live performances by popular artistes.
The Big 8 Bash party saw a two-hour Chinese concert. Other performers included local bands The Azenders, Kyoto Protocol, and Enterprise with singers Henley Hii, Karen Kong, Ultimate Power Star winner and first runner up, Vivian and Kopi and Reza Salleh as well as Liyana Fizi.

AT A GLIMPSE : LIYANA FIZI: CROSSING THE LINES
She's fallen in love with Bandung and wants to spread her wings across Indonesia. Time will tell.
Liyana Fizi is not your ordinary girl with a natural gift of a super-sweet smile and then cheerio. She's sexier than that; imagine a guitar attached to her visual appearance. She has a brilliant debut album.
Coming from our close neighboring country, Malaysia, she's trying her best to conquer Indonesia's indie scene.
"I feel that the Indonesian indie scene is something to be admired. There is creativity in the way things are done here," she says. "In my opinion, the scene here reflects a large supportive community who takes pride in being unique."
Indonesia's large size and different character has managed to attract some attention. Probably, uniformity is her best friend back home, so in coming to Indonesia, she believes another approach can be adopted.
A WONDERFUL TIME: LIYANA FIZI
Local singer-songwriter Liyana Fizi is having a lot of fun making music. By Adrian Yap CK
Singer-songwriter Liyana Fizi has every reason to be upbeat these days. There's been a genuine buzz around her solo career, since Estrella dissolved, culminating in some fairly high-profile shows, including a gig in Melbourne. Two years after she decided to go solo, she's releasing 'Between the Lines' an effort that fairly captures all she's experienced.
Recorded in Bandung, Indonesia, the album is full of charming and breezy acoustic-based ditties, veering between the more adult spectrum of twee pop to the less despairing side of bossanova. 'The recording process was a blast. We spent two weeks in Aru Studio which is in the heart of Bandung, and emerged with ten songs successfully recorded,' Liyana reveals. This was completed with the aid of her session/backing band consisting producer/guitarist Izaad Amir, bassist Firdaus Zulkeple and drummer Ruviyamin Ruslan, as well as her sound engineer Syafiq Yaacob.
LIYANA GETS HER BIG BREAK AT MARX GIG
Local indie singer-songwriter Liyana Fizi is looking forward to putting Malaysia on the international music scene when she opens for Grammy award winner Richard Marx's concert at the Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands, tonight.
A founding member of Malaysia's top indie-pop band Estrella, Liyana Fizi will be showcasing some of her acoustic tunes from her debut solo album Between The Lines, at the highly-anticipated concert.
American singer Richard Marx's first and only performance in Malaysia was more than a decade ago.
The 48-year-old singer-songwriter is known for his slow ballads and classic rock style.
MARX EAGER TO MEET MALAYSIAN FANS TONIGHT
SEPANG: Singer and songwriter Richard Marx had only fond memories of his gig in Kuala Lumpur and looked forward to another great concert tonight.
"I have nothing but great memories in KL. When we played here the fans were just great so I'm hoping that tonight is just like that," he said during an interview with New Straits Times and Berita Harian today.
RICHARD MARX PROVED HE WAS MORE THAN CAPABLE OF CAPTURING A BIG ARENA WITH JUST HIS VOICE AND GUITAR.
SOFT rock, adult contemporary music veteran Richard Marx has only recently begun to like Twitter.
If his tweets before and after his one-night concert at the Arena of Stars in Resorts World Genting last Sunday were anything to go by, it was a satisfying outing for both him and the fans he came to play for.
Adoring fans here had to wait some 14 years for him to make a return visit to our shores. He did a promo showcase (the Flesh And Bone album) at the Wall Street venue in Kuala Lumpur in 1997 while also playing gigs here in 1990 and 1991. The American singer-songwriter is no stranger to the local audience – his albums Richard Marx (1987) and Repeat Offender (1989) paving the way for his immense popularity in these parts.
THE TIPPING POINT
The Penang Island Jazz Festival is geared up for the next level as it builds up momentum and credibility.
TWO weeks ago, newcomer Norwegian indie jazz singer Eva Bjerga Haugen was in a rehearsal studio in Oslo frantically trying to comprehend the nuances of three classic Malay songs – Jimmy Boyle's Jauh Jauh and Putera Puteri and P. Ramlee's Getaran Jiwa – which she requested from the Penang Island Jazz Festival organisers.
As the story goes, she wanted to sing a local song and the one that she chose for her set – Jauh Jauh – was an inspired choice.
"Jauh Jauh has such a melancholic feel, that's why I chose it. It's just a beautiful song to fall in love with," said Eva in an interview a day before her performance.
With her solo debut, Liyana Fizi has found her voice as she aims for the mainstream.
Within the ever-crowded field of local independent singer-songwriters, Liyana Fizi must surely be one of the most beloved, judging from fans' enthusiastic reactions in both online and live performance situations.
Liyana presents a real well-rounded artiste – with both a honeyed voice and a real facility with the acoustic guitar, having started playing since her early teens and honing her sound to what can be best described as indie-pop with a dash of bossa nova. And she's endeared herself to a sizeable population of listeners out there with a combination of talent and good old fashioned charm.
MALAYSIA'S LIYANA FIZI MELTS OUR FOLK POP HEARTS
We have a feeling that Kuala Lumpur-based folk pop singer-songwriter Liyana Fizi doesn't hear "no" a lot. Just look at that smile. Your heart melted like a Popsicle, didn't it?
Just a guess, but we suspect that if anyone ever does deny Fizi anything, she probably just pulls out her acoustic guitar and strums a gentle-spirited, bossa-tinged number from her debut album Between the Lines — and the disagreement is settled. We couldn't hold out against her. Not if she played "Light Writing." If she played a sad one like "Last Notice" we'd probably just start weeping and apologize for no reason. Then we'd stutter about how instantly relatable all her songs are as we wiped away our tears.
Apart from folk pop songs, Liyana Fizi's live persona is also wrapped by atmosphere and soundscapes.
IT may have been a long road leading up to the release of Liyana Fizi's debut solo album, but there was no question she earned every fan in the auditorium that night.
A 450-strong crowd filled the Bentley Music Auditorium in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, last Sunday, all wearing stripes, the dress code for the night, being a play on the indie singer-songwriter's album title Between The Lines.
Opening for Liyana's show was singer-songwriter Narmi, better known as One Buck Short's Imran Fadzil Ishak. Stepping out of the role of drummer, Imran took centre stage as singer and guitarist, starting the night on a bright note with his laidback crooning and melodic sense.
BEST OF THE GIGS
Some may say female singer-songwriters Yuna (her MPO show) and Zee Avi (three concerts nationwide) made a bigger splash, but in Liyana Fizi's case, her intimate album launch at the Bentley Music Auditorium in September was one of the most memorable local gigs.
The crowd of 450 fans all dressed in stripes (a play on the album's name Between The Lines) further fostered the feeling that it was a themed-party among friends.
LIYANA FIZI - BETWEEN THE LINES
BETWEEN THE LINES
Reviewer: QISHIN TARIQ
Years in the making, folk pop songbird Liyana Fizi has finally found a label to share her debut album in Soundscape Records. The former Estrella frontwoman is now flying under the banner of her own name while performing with a permanent band of sessionists.
Lead single Light Writing, a collaborative effort between Liyana and lead guitarist Izaad Amir, shows how her style has expanded with bursts of vocal accompaniment and lush arrangement, featuring violin.
Recorded in Bandung, Indonesia, the album features a mix of summery ballads, pop and a hint of bossa nova, which combined with Liyana's vocals make Light Writing reminiscent of Japanese evergreen cover-singer Emi Fujita's work but thankfully lacking in soppy piano accompaniment.
FOR THE RECORD(S): BEST LOCAL RELEASES OF 2011
Liyana Fizi's Between the Lines isn't her debut per se, it is however her first attempt to show her mettle as a solo act. While the album still sounds a lot like her former band Estrella, you can't fault Liyana for it seeing as how Estrella was purely distinguishable by her voice. Her English songs fare better than her Malay tracks, but lead single 'Jatuh' is a great barometer to judge someone's emotional quotient.
READING 'BETWEEN THE LINES'
IN A NUTSHELL: Liyana Fizi first rose to fame with her band, Estrella, and their hit single 'Stay.' she has just released her debut solo album, Between the Lines, and fans will definitely eat it up. The album drips emotion and is, for the most part, penned by Liyana herself. The bilingual album – in English and Bahasa Malaysia – has something for every Liyana fan.
HIGH NOTES: Between the Lines shuffles between pop, indie, jazzy and folky – genres that complement each other. We highly recommend 'Kaku' and 'Light Writing' from this album. The latter has received airplay over the past year and has been a hit with listeners. 'Jatuh' hits close to home for anyone who has been in a relationship or in love. With her chirpy melodies and almost heart-wrenching lyrics, you don't quite know what to do with your sorrow while listening to Liyana's beautiful voice.
LIYANA FIZI – BETWEEN THE LINES | ALBUM REVIEW
Between The Lines isn't, strictly speaking, Liyana Fizi's debut effort. It's her first as a solo artiste, but in the larger scheme of things, another step in her journey as one of the more significant singer-songwriters in Malaysia's indie music scene. Liyana is, after all, a bit of an old hand here being one of the co-founders of the now defunct indie pop outfit, Estrella in 2006.
Between The Lines isn't an extension of Estrella, though the departure's not quite as fundamental from the band's somewhat jazzy-bossa inflected material of their self-titled long player released at the end of 2007. Stepping away from Estrella, Liyana has opted for a more stripped down sound and pursued arrangements previously unused such as the violin and cello on Jatuh and Last Notice.
'DUNIA KECIL' LIYANA FIZI
LIYANA FIZI'S BETWEEN THE LINES ALBUM LAUNCH @ BENTLEY MUSIC AUDITORIUM, 11/9, 8PM
Liyana Fizi will be launching her highly anticipated debut solo album this coming 11th of September at Bentley Music Auditorium and our ears managed to get a hold of a preview of the album, which includes singles such as Light Writing, Jatuh and her latest single, Kaku. Already contributing 2 songs (Jatuh & Last Notice) from the album to a remake of a Malaysian classic film, Azura, the album features 10 songs that will be sure to make it's rounds on national radio stations.
Doors will open at 8pm, and tickets are going for RM35 (gets you a free copy of Between The Lines) and kicks off with performances by Narmi and Tenderfist (she mentioned about a future collaboration with them). The showcase will also feature guest performers such as 4Peniti from Bandung, the band that helped her record her debut, and a special appearance from Adzwan Ani "Yob" from local avant garde rajas, Sphere (also her former bandmate and co-founder of Estrella).
SONGS FROM THE HEART
Liyana Fizi's voice reminds me of Spring. There's a freshness to it, laced with a sweet, gentle lightness that makes listening to her songs all the more pleasant. Not that her songs need all that much help if you're familiar with her work. She fronted the short-lived indie band Estrella who had a modest radio hit with the catchy love song Stay.
While Estrella's history, Liyana herself has been busy working on her debut solo album Between The Lines. The 10-track album was recorded in Bandung, Indonesia with Liyana composing and writing lyrics for most of the material. Composer Izaad Amir and local indie artist OJ Law (Only One) also had a hand in writing music for the album.
SUNDOWN @ THE TROPICAL SPICE GARDENS
Thursday night, December 1st 2011 saw a tremendous start to this year's Penang International Jazz Festival. In the most beautiful of settings at the Tropical Spice Gardens, Batu Ferrenghi, the Indie performance evening has set the bar high for all that follow.
As a showcase for young Malaysian musical talent, the evening surpassed the highest of expectations. Even a true Penang tropical downpour of biblical proportions (I'm talking Noah, ark, animals two-by-two...) couldn't dampen the enthusiastic crowd's enjoyment of the 3 original talents on display.
Liyana Fizi, Bihzhu and Az Samad were a perfect combination of unique musical entertainment. Accomplished, confident and extremely good company for the evening!
JAZZ FEST PROMISES A FUN MUSICAL EXPERIENCE
THE annual Penang Jazz Festival is back for its eighth edition from Dec 1 to 4.
Speaking at a press conference recently, festival director Paul Augustin said the festival had gradually gained international recognition in the jazz and music industry.
"The objective has always been to create not just a concert but a musical experience with a number of supporting activities from workshops to fringe performances to exhibitions.
"The main focus of the festival is not only to entertain but also educate and hopefully inspire the younger generation and to enhance their creativity by listening to a wide variety of musical genres," said Augustin.
CHILLY FIZI – RECREATION
There's a unique, almost ineffable, quality to Liyana FIzi. The girl-next-door demeanour she exudes both on stage and in person and her coy silliness in conversations give the impression that Liyana is perpetually laid back. It's almost as if she's unperturbed by the stress of modern living whereas urbanites can attest to how suffocating it can get to live in the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur. With constant traffic congestion, growing smog, increasingly cramped space and the boorish KLites that come with living under those conditions, it makes us wonder just how Liyana manages to have her peace of mind here. JUICE speaks to the effervescent ex-Estrella vocalist to find out just what keeps her chilled out in Kuala Lumpur while the rest of us struggle with our sanity.
ORGANISERS TO RAISE RM12,000 FOR SINGLE MOTHERS AND CHILDREN WITH AIDS/HIV
THE Kuala Lumpur Twitter festival, known as Twestival, is back to do its bit for charity, joining almost 200 cities across the world.
It is the third consecutive Twestival in KL and will bring together fans of social networks and micro-blogging service for a good cause.
It would be held at Finnegan's Irish Pubs & Restaurants, Mid Valley Megamall from 7.30pm on March 24. Tickets are available for a minimum donation of RM35.
Organised by volunteers, Twestival KL will raise money for Pertubuhan Masyarakat Prihatin (Prihatin), an organisation that seeks to care for single mothers and children living with AIDS/HIV.
GET PERSONAL WITH LIYANA FIZI
The wistful indie singer wishes all her fans and R.AGE readers Selamat Hari Raya!
FOR Liyana Fizi, Shah Alam, Selangor, is where the heart is. The singer-songwriter usually celebrates Hari Raya Aidilfitri with her relatives in their hometown. But even though she will be busy celebrating with family members, Liyana, 28, also makes time for close friends during Hari Raya.
It has become somewhat of a tradition for her to invite all her close friends to chill out at her house on the first night of Hari Raya, and to unwind after having eaten all the delicious food throughout the day.
"My favourite food to have during Hari Raya is cookies. I love kuih raya. I do bake some cookies, but they are mostly the simple stuff like butter cookies, almond cookies, cornflakes cups, chocolate chip cookies and batik cookies," Liyana says.
September 2011, Kuala Lumpur - Local indie sweetheart Liyana Fizi celebrates new tunes with her fans, with the release of her highly anticipated debut solo album titled, ʻBetween the Linesʼ. With this album launch, the singer-songwriter embarks on a new musical direction as a solo artist since her band days in Estrella, and invites listeners to share her life over the past two years.
With coaxing vocals and gentle pluckings of the guitar, ʻBetween the Linesʼ portrays Liyanaʼs inner musings and thoughts through stripped back acoustic tunes tinged with pop and jazzy accents. "I went through a process of stepping back to recapture what exactly it was that made me happy playing music," Liyana explains. "I realised that (music) is a form of expression for me. What I couldnʼt say (in words), I sing."
ʻBetween the Linesʼ features ten songs, some of which were composed by Liyana herself, while a few others were contributed by composer Izaad Amir, who is also her lead session guitarist and the albumʼs music director. It also features ʻOnly Oneʼ, a tune contributed by local indie artist OJ Law, with lyrics co-written by Liyana. The album was recorded earlier this year in Bandung, Indonesia.
As Izaad succinctly remarked of Liyana's music: "Dunia Liyana kecil, tapi impiannya besar." Liyana observes the world around her with fascinating perception, as expressed in the hopeful opening words ("seketika ku terfikir, perasaan yang tiba semalam….") of ʻJatuhʼ, the lyrical play of the hit single ʻLight Writingʼ, and the emotional grief of ʻLast Noticeʼ.
Of her goals, Liyana says: "My hope is to bring music lovers together with this album. There was a strong sense of community at the back of my mind while I was recording, and I realised that I really wanted my listeners to find something that is close to their hearts in ʻBetween the Linesʼ. Something familiar, and something they can relate to."
Two songs from the album, ʻJatuhʼ and ʻLast Noticeʼ, will be featured in the soundtrack of ʻAzuraʼ directed by the renown filmmaker Aziz M. Osman. ʻAzuraʼ is a remake of the 80s blockbuster film and is scheduled for release in late 2011.
Liyana Fizi is stepping out as a solo artiste and enjoying the fresh challenge.
Label wrangles are a real pain. Just ask former Estrella frontwoman Liyana Fizi. The breezy acoustic-based band had started gaining decent momentum in the local music scene, and recording a debut that was well-received in mainstream circles. That culminated in a British tour together with Seven Collar T-Shirt in April last year.
It was also the same period when the label woes started getting unbearable, leading to the band's official demise late last year. But Liyana's attitude appears rather balanced about the whole affair.
SOUNDS OF THE CITY
Urbanscapes 2010 is positioned as a one-stop platform for the Klang Valley's best and brightest creative minds.
This past month, rumblings of the return of annual all-day creative arts festival Urbanscapes 2010 have certainly been setting social networks such as Facebook and Twitter afire with keen interest.
One could look at this as a testament to Urbanscapes' ability to capture the imaginations of our youthful creative communities on a grassroots level in spite of limited corporate sponsorship and media push as compared to events of this scale.
THE URBAN RENEWAL
Brimming with precocious indie acts and curious collaborations, Urbanscapes festival-goers enjoyed a glorious day out filled with music.
The theme at this year's Urbanscapes 2010 all-day creative arts festival was "business as usual", albeit with a more streamlined approach to the content and line-up. One certainly couldn't fault the organisers for adhering to a winning formula that was fully embraced by a 10,000 urban middle-class audience swarming Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre's (KLPac) verdant environs.
Despite concerns of the festival not having any true headliner status music acts this year, it was clear that organisers meant to push forth a more balanced, holistic vision encompassing other creative pillars such as the arts, theatre, design, photography and fashion.
Which is not to say that the festival was without its charms on the musical front, as the line-up this year certainly did its fair share in contributing to the overall festival experience. Four main performance stages – The Sunset Disco, Pentas 1, Pentas 2 and The Lawn Stage – played host to a number of new and old faces from the music scene last Saturday.
AIRPORT ABUZZ WITH MUSIC AND SHOPPING
POPULAR indie bands and song writers such as Liyana Fizi, Rashdan Harith, Ady Suwardy, Najwa and Pesawat came together in the name of charity to perform at the MAS Touchdown @ Skypark Terminal SAAS Airport recently.
The indie concert and charity bazaar was organised by Malaysia Airlines in collaboration with Go International (the organiser of Indie Youth Fest 2009) with Skypark as the venue sponsor and Bijou Bazaar as the bazaar management company.
Malaysia Airlines' managing director/chief executive officer Tengku Datuk Azmil Zahruddin Raja Abdul Aziz said: "The MAS Touchdown @ Skypark Terminal SAAS Airport is about connecting with the communities around us to raise money for charity. What you see here today has actually grown from humble beginnings in 2008 as an internal employee driven charity jumble sale at Malaysia Airlines.
This Merdeka, it's interesting to note that our own independent music scene has blurred racial lines.
AS with any relatively young culture, progress comes slow and steady, but one particular area has seen impressive strides – multiracial appeal across a wide musical audience. A whole new generation of artistes has been reaching across the lines and giving us a small reminder of the days of audience-bridging icons like P. Ramlee, Alleycats and Sheila Majid, and more recently YouTube sensation Zee Avi who went from shopping bazaar stages to the international stage courtesy of Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records.
Chief amongst the new guard is indie songstress Yuna, who has managed to attract a huge multiracial fanbase within a relatively short time.
LEONA LEWIS TO PERFORM AT BUKIT BINTANG
What a way to end October with a bang! British R&B star Leona Lewis is heading to our shore again, thanks to Volkswagen Group Malaysia.
It has been two years since she rocked the crowd at the MTV Asia Awards 2008 at Arena of Stars, Genting. Come Saturday, the Bleeding Love singer will perform at a street party held by Volkswagen to launch their latest models, namely the Polo, Golf and Scirocco, in Malaysia.
NEW CARS SET TO BE LAUNCHED AT GRAND BASH
Volkswagen Group Malaysia (VGM) is proud to present Leona Lewis for the first time in Malaysia. Lewis, together with Australian pop-rock group The Veronicas, will launch the latest Volkswagen models at a street party at Changkat Bukit Bintang tomorrow from 7pm onwards.
The launch aims to officially introduce the award-winning Volkswagen Polo 1.2l 105PS, the Golf and Scirocco 1.4l 160PS — all with the TSI engine and ground-breaking 7-speed direct shift gearbox DSG — to customers in Malaysia.
